Urban Planter
Finding enough space and sunlight in the city for a garden can be challenging. The outdoor upper deck of a home in downtown Toronto was turned into the platform for an urban garden. Four hands and one day was all it took. The two by tens were recycled from a neighboring house renovation leaving the filter cloth and sawhorse clips the only new purchases. The triangular form serves several purposes - a strong and stable frame for the planter as well as a system for tying up tomato plants and cucumber vines. Straddled between the legs is a 18" trough, which serves as the garden bed and is double lined with filter cloth. The soil was a mixture of free Toronto compost and regular soil. The plants were mostly grown from heirloom seeds purchased at the Toronto Brick Work's seed fair.
Over the course of the summer the garden helped to keep the deck cool - a secret green oasis into which one could enter for a quiet read or glass of iced tea. Heaps of tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers and fresh herbs were the Summer's bounty!
