Finding enough space and sunlight in the city for a garden can be challenging. The outdoor upper deck of a home in downtown Toronto was turned into the platform for an urban garden. Four hands and one day was all it took. The two by tens were recycled from a neighboring house renovation leaving the filter cloth and sawhorse clips the only new purchases. The triangular form serves several purposes - a strong and stable frame for the planter as well as a system for tying up tomato plants and cucumber vines. Straddled between the legs is a 18" trough, which serves as the garden bed and is double lined with filter cloth. The soil was a mixture of free Toronto compost and regular soil. The plants were mostly grown from heirloom seeds purchased at the Toronto Brick Work's seed fair. -
Over the course of the summer the garden helped to keep the deck cool - a secret green oasis into which one could enter for a quiet read or glass of iced tea. Heaps of tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers and fresh herbs were the Summer's bounty! -
